Effect of phase noise degradation

Hello,

The DW1000 datasheet lists the maximum allowed SSB phase noise power for the external reference to be -132 dBc/Hz @ 1kHz and -145 dBc/Hz @ 10kHz offset. Under some vibration scenarios it is anticipated that the phase noise may degrade beyond these limits.

  1. Can Decawave comment on the effect of phase noise degradation on the UWB system (receive and transmit)?
  2. Has any analysis been done on the effect of vibration on the UWB comms/ranging? Sampling jitter due to phase noise degradation is one of the things that comes to mind.

Using Decawave PDoA kits, we’ve implemented a multiple anchor ranging transaction as outlined in this TREK1000 white paper: https://www.decawave.com/sites/default/files/aps016_moving_from_trek1000_to_a_product.pdf

We’ve noted that the longer transaction degrades the performance of the ranging result. Has there been analysis by Decawave regarding transaction time, TCXO drift and phase noise of the TCXO?

Thanks

Hi,
Have a look at our application note APS011 on Sources of error in TWR.
How many PdoA anchors would you be using? and could I ask why you have not chosen for a TdoA solution?
